Tyran Young, 38, of Sarasota, has been handed a 40-year prison sentence followed by 20 years of probation for a calculated 2019 shooting that targeted Sarasota County Fire Department (SCFD) paramedics.
Young, a thirteen-time convicted felon, staged the attack in an elaborate scheme to seek leniency on separate pending felony charges.
The shooting occurred on Jan. 7, 2019, when SCFD paramedics responded to an automated 911 call reporting a fall at 2932 Goodrich Ave. After residents denied making the call, the paramedics returned to their ambulance, and Young opened fire, striking the vehicle twice. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Conviction and Sentence
Young was convicted of a series of charges stemming from the incident, including:
- Two counts of aggravated assault on a firefighter
- Shooting into a vehicle
- Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
- Unlawful use of a two-way communications device
- Misuse of 911
Investigators determined Young orchestrated the entire event, falsely blaming a juvenile relative and suggesting the youth was motivated by a family tragedy involving first responders. Evidence included Young’s cellphone searches mirroring the automated 911 message and a link to a similar, potential “dry run” call in 2018.
Years of Delays and Failed Tactics

Young was initially set to begin a one-year prison sentence for unrelated charges the day after the shooting, making his motive clear: avoid the one-year term…
