Burglary suspect shoots at Manatee County deputies, leads manhunt into woods: MCSO

BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) — A manhunt unfolded in Bradenton early Monday morning after a suspected burglar opened fire on deputies and then ran into the woods, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident began around 11:40 p.m. Sunday, when deputies received a report of someone breaking into vehicles at a tire shop off 52nd Place East.

The suspect, later identified as Dayton Harris, 25, was wearing black clothing and a ski mask, according to officials. Harris took off running after deputies arrived and fired shots in their direction, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities lost sight of Harris as he ran south across State Road 70 into a wooded area behind a shopping center. A perimeter was established, and deputies enlisted the help of K-9 and aviation units to search for Harris, according to officials.

Deputies said they found a firearm, ski mask and other evidence as the search entered the early morning hours. Then, around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, a bystander reported seeing a man matching the suspect’s description go into an abandoned trailer in the Westwind Mobile Home Park…
