Saratoga Place at Palmer Ranch the location of incident
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 5050 Central Sarasota Parkway, which is within Saratoga Place at Palmer Ranch, the Sheriff’s Office announced late that afternoon.
At 8:53 a.m. on Nov. 4, “the Emergency Operations Bureau received a 911 notification from a caller threatening to harm himself,” a news release said. “Members of the Patrol Bureau were dispatched, and the first deputy arrived at 9:05 a.m. The deputy contacted the subject,” who was armed with a kitchen knife outside the residence, the release added.
In response to a Sarasota News Leader request the afternoon of Nov. 5, Matthew Binkley, manager of the Community Affairs Division of the Sheriff’s Office, identified the subject as 70-year-old Robert Glenn Goolsby.
“The deputy gave multiple verbal commands” to Goolsby to drop the weapon, the release continued, but Goolsby “did not comply” and, instead, “pointed the knife at the deputy, and advanced toward the deputy. The deputy had no option but to respond with deadly force to protect himself,” the release said…
