SMH hosts gene therapy trials for bladder removal surgery

SARASOTA — Sarasota Memorial is looking for people to participate in two clinical trials for patients with early stage bladder cancer as it studies potential non-surgical options.

Sarasota Memorial’s Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute is running the studies that will look into non–muscle-invasive bladder cancer that accounts for 70–80% of all bladder cancers, according to a news release.

“(It) can be difficult to treat due to high rates of recurrence and progression, often leading to surgeries that can significantly impact quality of life,” the news release stated. “Some patients with high-grade NMIBC do not respond to current treatments such as BCG immunotherapy, which works by stimulating the immune system to attack cancer cells.”…
