Solar storms bringing northern lights to unexpected places

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Solar storms have been making headlines as northern lights appear in unexpected places across the United States.

The phenomenon starts 93 million miles away on the sun, which sometimes releases massive bursts of energy called solar flares or coronal mass ejections. These giant clouds of charged particles race toward Earth.
