Trial opens for Sarasota man accused in 2021 Hyatt Place shooting

A Sarasota man accused of fatally shooting his ex-partner in a hotel near the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport in December 2021 appeared in court for the first day of his trial.

Brennan Wakey, 29, is charged with second-degree murder and tampering with evidence. If he is found guilty of murder, the maximum sentence he could receive is life in prison.

Wakey was arrested a day after Sarasota police were called to the Hyatt Place hotel on University Parkway where a housekeeper discovered Colton Wright, 24, lying in a pool of blood. Wright was pronounced dead at the scene…
