FHP Trooper Michael Diego dies after medical emergency at academy

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – A procession of law enforcement vehicles traveling along Interstate 75 in Sarasota drew widespread attention on social media Friday after residents spotted flashing lights from multiple units. The convoy was transporting the body of Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Diego from Tallahassee to Southwest Florida, where he was from.

On Thursday, FHP confirmed that Trooper Diego died after suffering a medical emergency while training at FHP’s Academy in Havana, in North Florida. Troopers on scene and Gadsden County EMS attempted life-saving efforts. Diego was life-flighted to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where he died.

Northport Police shared a photo on their Facebook account showing officers and Northport Fire Rescue standing at salute as the procession passed through the city. “Northport Police and the Northport Fire Rescue standing salute as they pass through our city,” the department said. “We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends and fellow troopers.”…
