SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Sarasota County Schools is hosting heart screening events for student athletes this week, ahead of a new statewide requirement set to take effect in July.
The screenings are part of a law passed during the 2025 legislative session, requiring first-time student athletes to get an electrocardiogram, or ECG, before participating in sports.

There have been cases of youth athletes collapsing with undetected cardiac abnormalities during athletic events in the past, even some in the Tampa area. The district said the goal is to prevent another tragedy from taking place and ultimately save lives.
