SSU Women win on controversial last shot, Men fall by 1

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Savannah State women and men split a twin bill with Clark Atlanta University on Jan. 22 at Tiger Arena.

The women’s game ended in controversy. With 7.4 seconds remaining and Savannah State trailing 55-54, Nyla Allen drove the lane and made a basket as the horn sounded. However, before the shot, Nyla was fouled. The officials counted the basket and put 0.5 second back on the clock.

Clark Atlanta asked for a video replay. However, Tiger Arena is not equipped with video replay. Clark Atlanta head coach Tony Bailey did not allow his team to take the floor, in what appeared to be a protest of the last-second foul call. The officials suspended the game. Savannah State earned a 56-55 victory.

“You know it’s unfortunate,” Savannah State head coach Cedric Baker said. “You know emotions are a part of the game. But of course as coaches, we want to present mental toughness and not get too high, not too low. It’s a competitive game I understand why coach got a little emotional. For the safety of the kids, for the safety of the student-athletes, we suspended the game.”
