Don’t miss your chance to go down in Savannah’s history with “The Memory Project”

SAVANNAH, Ga (WSAV)- Have you ever wanted to be a part of history? Well, now is your chance! The city of Savannah is holding an archiving event to preserve the human side of local history.

Typically, most city archives focus on government records like taxes, titles, and permits, but those documents don’t always tell the stories of the people behind the papers. That’s why the Savannah Municipal Archives started an ongoing preservation initiative called “The Memory Project” designed to fill in some of the gaps.

“Specifically, we have gaps related to African American history, women’s history, LGBTQ history, because those groups in the past have been marginalized.” says Archives Director Luciana Spracher, “We need to get voices to the table to help share those stories.”

This weekend, they’re inviting residents from District 5 to participate, which includes Tatumville, Cam Park, Liberty City, and surrounding areas.

They want to learn about and share the stories of the homes, businesses, churches, schools, parks, landmarks, and people that have made our communities grow throughout the decades.
