HILTON HEAD, S.C. (WSAV) — A celebration honoring National Freedom Day will be held in historic Mitchellville Freedom Park during the first week of February.
The celebration is set to take place on Saturday, Feb. 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as the community comes together to highlight the contributions of Black community members of the Lowcountry.
Attendees can expect to see Aunt Pearlie Sue and the Gullah Kinfolk, an award-winning performance group that will both educate and ‘wow’ the audience as they tell the story of the direct ties between West Africa, focusing on Sierra Leone, with South Carolina and the entire Gullah-Geechee Corridor.
The event is free, but pre-registration is highly encouraged and can be done so by clicking or tapping here.
For more information about the event, you can also call 843-255-7301.
There will also be a catered Freedom Day ‘Traditional Brekwus’ held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. that will be hosted by NIBCAA. Although the gathering will require guests to purchase breakfast tickets to gain entry, diners will enjoy delicious food prepared by Melly Mel’s.
