Large jellyfish washes up on Hilton Head Island

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – While on Hilton Head Island, beachgoer Jeffrey Gelinas came across a jellyfish larger than his size 13 shoe.

Tybee Beach Ecology Trips helped WSAV identify the creature as a mushroom jellyfish, which they say is the largest type of jelly seen in our area.

Known as a wintertime jelly, they do not have a painful sting at all, but if you come in contact, you might feel a light tingle.

These gentle giants can grow 10 to 20 inches in diameter and are considered a delicacy in Japan, eaten raw or pickled.
