May Howard Elementary students hold food drive for Second Harvest

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Students at a local elementary school are getting a lesson in compassion.

May Howard Elementary School recently hosted a food drive benefiting Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia.

“It feels good to be able to help people when they can’t necessarily get all the stuff they need,” said fifth-grader Sienna Webb.

This is the second year that students at May Howard from all grade levels have gotten together to bring awareness to a problem many face daily — food insecurity.

“I looked throughout the food today and it was lots of stuff for our backpack, and we do over 7,000 backpacks a week so to be able to have food to take home on the weekends and make sure children who are at a risk for hunger have access to food its really critical,” said Mary Jane Crouch, executive director of Second Harvest.

Students from each class and grade level competed against each other to see who could bring in the most food items for prizes like hot chocolate, extra recess time, popsicle and movie parties and a pajama day.
