SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) hosted a gala on Friday recognizing 57 educators across the district and naming the 2025 Teacher of the Year.
It’s a yearlong process to choose the best teacher to represent SCCPSS in the state finals.
“The Teacher of the Year is someone who represents his or her colleagues at the school,” said Cherie Golden, Savannah-Chatham Literacy Effectiveness Officer and 2022 State Teacher of the Year.
“It’s someone who advocates for teachers and for students, and ensuring that students are growing to their greatest potential,” Golden continued. “Teacher of the Year is somebody who serves to represent voices for teachers and students for the year that they serve.”
It starts with teachers being nominated by their colleagues who were recognized during Tuesday’s gala. They then have to complete a series of screenings, dwindling it down to five finalists.
As a former title holder for Teacher of the Year, Golden shared her advice to the future winner.
