Savannah matriarch turns to community for support after devastating house fire

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Community support — it’s something we all need in times of tragedy. One woman is asking for that after her family home was engulfed in flames at the start of the new year.

It’s not how anyone would want to start the new year, but Barbara Harris is still in good spirits after her home caught on fire two weeks after the start of 2024.

“You have to laugh to keep from crying,” Barbara Harris told News 3.

On January 17th, Barbara Harris received a phone call that would change the course of her year — Her family home was on fire for the second time in her life.

“When I got here and once I got down the road I burst into tears because I thought about back in 2000 when the house caught on fire and we lost our little brother so I kept thinking oh lord please don’t let any of my grandkids be home because they stay here,” said Harris.

Thankfully no one was home when the fire started and the fire department told Barbara there was nothing she could’ve done to prevent it.
