Honoring Black History Month: In the kitchen at ‘Narobia’s Grits and Gravy’

SAVANNAH, Ga (WSAV) As we continue to honor Black History Month, we’re celebrating the contributions that African Americans have made to our collective culture.

When it comes to the arts, there’s a long list of legendary black writers, singers, painters, and musicians. Culinary arts have also made a big impact on society, especially here in the South.

This week we visited Narobia’s Grits and Gravy. It’s owned by the Reid family, and the restaurant has had a footprint here in Savannah for over 20 years. Originally operating on Waters Avenue, their new location on Habersham has been a big hit in the Thomas Square neighborhood.

Chef Sieda Reid is the chef, and she explains that the magic happens in the kitchen, where the ingredients are simple, but the flavors are bold.

“I try to keep it where it’s like, consistent with the right seasoning, love in it, and being mindful that if I like it and I enjoy it I feel like putting all that into it, others will too.” Says Chef Sieda Reid, “I think it’s just the flavors that I put… a little pinch of basil, I like a little basil I’m gonna share that with you. A little basil. And that’s it.”
