Jan. 6 rioters from Georgia begin their criminal trials. Here’s what they’re charged with.

Two Georgians began their trials on Monday for their roles in the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in 2021. The defendants – Phillip “Bunky” Crawford and Dominic Box – are charged with multiple felonies and face significant time in prison if convicted.

They were among a group of rioters who attacked police officers and livestreamed chaotic scenes from the Capitol, where members of Congress had fled moments earlier. To date, 24 Georgians have been charged with crimes related to the attack on the Capitol, according to a tracker from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Phillip ‘Bunky’ Crawford

Crawford, 47, of Douglasville, Georgia, pled guilty in May to four felony counts of assaulting police, one count of civil disorder, and one count of violent conduct at the U.S. Capitol.

During an interview on Rumble, a popular streaming platform among right-wing influencers, Crawford explained his reasoning behind pleading guilty to some of his charges, saying, “I realized [prosecutors] are not following the Constitution and people aren’t winning. I’m looking at the previous cases, and it don’t look good.”
