Guns-in-cars ordinance enforcement limited

Savannah’s guns-in-cars ordinance is now five months old and has received both praise and criticism. It is currently the subject of a legal battle in Chatham County Superior Court. Under this ordinance, having a gun stolen from an unlocked vehicle or one that is not secured in the center console, trunk, or behind the seat can result in a $1,000 fine or a one-month jail sentence. “We just want people to lock their cars and secure their guns. We know what happens when guns are not secured; they can show up in violent events elsewhere,” said Savannah Mayor Van Johnson.
