The Effingham County School District announced Wednesday that students will be released from school two hours early Thursday. Early release was implemented as a safety measure as Helene is expected to make landfall in Georgia Thursday. Although the storm is expected to pass through the western half of the state, the National Hurricane Center expects wind and rain to be pervasive throughout Georgia.
“Please expect students to arrive home early tomorrow,” reads a post on the district’s Facebook page. “This will allow us to have all buses, students, and families safely home between 3:30 and 4 p.m. Please know that the safety of our entire school community is our top priority. We will re-evaluate the track of the storm again on Thursday and communicate any additional decisions regarding school operations for Friday. After school care providers from the YMCA and LEAP will be in contact with registered students’ families concerning any closure hours tomorrow.
