SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Broughton Street has a new look just in time for Veterans Day on Monday.
Wednesday evening, dozens of volunteers gathered in downtown Savannah to hang 45 flags across five blocks. Each flag had been draped on the casket of a veteran.
Donated by family members, the flags are now displayed with the veterans’ names written on them.

“We stand for the flag. It’s the symbol of our country, what we put on a uniform and swore an oath to defend,” said Joe Higgins, chairman of the Veterans Council of Chatham County . “So we just want to honor the flag, putting them up there and being able to look at them — it’s a beautiful sight.”
Savannah’s Veterans Day parade kicks off Monday morning. If you can’t make it downtown to watch, WSAV will broadcast the event starting at 10 a.m., followed by our Veterans Voices special, giving a spotlight to local veterans and the important issues that the community faces.
