40 primates on the loose after escape from South Carolina research center

YEMASSEE, S.C. (WSAV) — The Yemassee Police Department is asking for the public’s help locating 40 primates that escaped on Wednesday.

The primates escaped from the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center located on Castle Hall Road, according to local law enforcement.

Should the public locate one of the escaped primates, officials said do not attempt to interact with them. Instead, call 911 immediately.

Residents are strongly advised to keep doors and windows secured to prevent the animals from entering their homes.

Yemassee PD has set up traps around the area and is using on-site thermal imaging cameras to help locate the animals.

It’s not the first time primates have escaped from the research center. WSAV reported about a group that escaped in May 2016 .

Alpha Genesis Inc. provides nonhuman primate products and bio-research services worldwide, according to their website. This includes serum, plasma, whole blood, peripheral blood mononuclear cell and tissue samples.
