Live Oak Libraries hosts first StoryWalk event to promote literacy and exercise

“Snow in the Jungle” or “Nieve en la Jungle” is a children’s book following a polar bear named Snow/Nieve as she moves to a strange, new place – everything is different, the food, the weather, the people and the language. This book about the anxieties and hardships of moving was the book of choice by Live Oak Public Libraries for its first StoryWalk experience through a part of Tom Triplett park in Pooler.

“This is a new project for us, in collaboration with Chatham County Parks,” said Executive Director Lola DeWitt. “We wanted to have something that was focused on healthy living and literacy. This is actually something that was started with public libraries nationwide during COVID, to keep people engaged and moving outdoors.”

The book, printed and displayed in both English and Spanish, was chosen that way purposefully. The part of the community with English as a second language, or moving to an area without English skills is growing quickly. In the last decade, the Hispanic population in Chatham County has grown by 66% . The event included a reading of the book in English, then later in Spanish.
