Pack your patience: Record holiday travel expected

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The holiday season is here, and so is the Christmas chaos. Holiday travel is set to hit new heights this year, with AAA predicting a record number of travelers.

If you’re hoping for an empty seat next to you on your flight this week, you might want to rethink. The holiday travel period ranges up to 13 days, but that doesn’t mean the airport is going to be any less crowded.

AAA says nearly 120 million Americans will be traveling 50 miles or more for the holidays starting Dec. 21 through New Year’s Day. That’s an increase of 3 million more travelers compared to last year.

Around 8 million will fly, with air travel up nearly 5% compared to last year, the AAA said. The numbers show more people flying for the holidays than ever before.

Here in Georgia, more than 3.7 million people are expected to hit the roads or skies. Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport officials share they are anticipating more than 80,000 passengers, and they’ll be much busier than Thanksgiving.
