BTFD stated that the blaze was initially reported at about 5:30 p.m. on Monday, December 23, as a fire on the back porch of the residence. Fire crews from stations 30, 31, 33 and 35 found heavy fire on the back side covering both floors of the two-story structure.

The front side showed no active flames, but heavy smoke was visible, while the right side had visible flames through windows.

Frequent wind gusts fueled the flames and made fighting the fire particularly challenging for the crews. Crews from three engine companies, a quint, ladder truck and heavy rescue all worked to contain the fire with additional aid from Beaufort County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Bluffton Police Department (BPD).

Battalion Chiefs from BTFD stations 35 and 38 provided oversight during the operation.
