BLUFFTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A historic 1800s-era home that was part of the original Bluffton Township footprint was destroyed Monday afternoon after a fire broke out on the back porch, officials said.
Bluffton Township Fire District received a call about a fire on the back porch of a home on Bridge Street in Old Town Bluffton around 5:30 p.m.
When crews from stations 30, 31, 33 and 35 arrived, they found both backside floors of the two-story home were on fire. The front side of the house did not show flames, but heavy smoke was visible, and the right side of the home showed flames through the windows, the fire district reported.
Repeat wind gusts continued to fuel the flames, making extinguishing the fire more difficult. Firefighters fought the flames from the front and back of the home.
“Crews from three engine companies, a quint, ladder truck, and heavy rescue worked to contain the fire, with support from Beaufort County EMS and the Bluffton Police Department,” said Stephen Combs, spokesperson for Bluffton Township Fire District. “Battalion Chiefs from BTFD stations 35 and 38 provided oversight during the operation.”
