BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) — Bryan County is taking steps to ensure its sheriff’s deputies are better prepared for the future.
Plans are underway for a brand-new training facility and firing range.
Just off of Highway 280 on Bacontown Road sits a plot of land that will soon hold significance to the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office.
“We have never to my knowledge, and I’ve been doing this a long time, we have never had our own training facility firing range or training building,” Bryan County Sheriff Mark Crowe told News 3.
The search for a training facility in north Bryan County started in 2021.
Bryan County appoints new fire and emergency services chief
We’re told the training facility and firing range are needed because of the county’s rapid growth. Crowe said it’s time to start meeting the demands, making sure his deputies are equipped and qualified.
The sheriff said the project could cost more than $1 million, and the county has budgeted $845,000.
“For us, it’s up until the point we are at right now has been a catch-up game because for years the sheriff’s office just kind of glided along as we’re OK with the status quo, we’re good with what we have,” Crowe said. “As this county continues to grow, we have to stay abreast of new technology. We have to stay abreast of the growth with people, with vehicles, with training.”
