Renowned Savannah preacher to be honored with street naming

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Pastor Matthew Southall Brown Sr. (1922-2021), an icon in the Savannah community who spent 35 years at the helm of Savannah’s St. John Baptist Church, will be honored with a street renamed in his memory.

“Rev. Matthew Southall Brown, Sr. Way”, located on East Broad Between Hartridge and Nicoll Streets, will officially be designated on Saturday, March 28, at 1:00 p.m.

Before his tenure at the pulpit, Brown served in the 9th Division, 60th Infantry Regiment, Company E. , making him one of the first African Americans to desegregate the military in World War II.

It was his inspiration to other faith leaders in Savannah that made such an impact. One notable soul he touched was future Reverend and United States Senator Raphael Warnock (D)…
