U.S. Army Corps of Engineers studying ship wake impact on Tybee Island beaches

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) -Beach goers to Tybee island’s north beach, might notice steep drop offs from erosion, and dangerous waves caused by ship wake.

The island is working with the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, who is currently deploying equipment to measure the waves and tides, to better understand what steps should be taken to make the beach safer for everyone.

“We do have these giant ships that come through, and from time to time, create a wake that will wash away people’s belongings. There’s a danger that they think their kid playing at the sand might get washed away,” explained Tybee Island’s mayor Brian West…
