Crocker Case: Judge to decide on dismissal of civil suit against Effingham County School District

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – An Effingham County judge will decide whether to dismiss a case against the Effingham County School District involving the murder of two teens, Mary and Elwyn Crocker, Jr.

The lawsuit, filed in 2023, alleges the Effingham County School District didn’t properly follow their own policies regarding reporting child abuse. The complaint focuses on a school district policy that requires reports of child abuse to be submitted to leadership in the school district, the Department of Family and Children Services, and local law enforcement. Attorneys for the estate of Mary Crocker allege that a student reported abuse against Elwyn Crocker, Jr. to a counselor in March 2017. The suit states that the report was only passed on to DFCS, not law enforcement. DFCS decided not to investigate the report.
