16th Night of Champions Awards in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Among the 25 Bills signed into Law on Thursday, the Dignity in Pay Act was one, and it was in perfect timing for the Night of Champions Awards put on by the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society. The night recognizes employers who have opened up employment options for those with different abilities.

Senate Bill 55 sought to change the minimum wage requirements for those working with disabilities. In The past those could receive less than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 but starting in July, this will begin to slowly phase out.

“We have completely changed that now we have people in the community, living as independently as they can, and we are making sure they have opportunities to work , and have as much dignity as they can,” said Georgia House Representative Jesse Petrea…
