Woman accused of posing as a lawyer requests jury trial

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – Sharong Nicole Smith, who’s accused of posing as a lawyer in Chatham County, Georgia, may face trial in August.

Smith is facing fourteen charges, including multiple counts of forgery, identity fraud, and theft by deception, which are all felonies. She’s also facing multiple misdemeanor counts of the unauthorized practice of law.

Smith appeared in Chatham County court on Monday for a plea hearing. The case was scheduled for a trial docket call in early May (which is a court date in which a judge checks on the status of a case or addresses pending motions before a trial), but in a joint motion for continuance before that hearing, both the prosecution and Smith’s defense team asked for the court date to be moved because they were “close to reaching a plea agreement.” A plea hearing was then scheduled for Monday…
