SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Thursday, June 19th, is Juneteenth, a federal holiday that marks the day when the last enslaved Americans were finally freed nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s a day that celebrates the completion of freedom for every American citizen. In Savannah, that freedom was honored with the second annual Juneteenth Walk to the River.
If you drove along MLK Boulevard on Thursday, you could see a large crowd walking down the street. This large group all came together for the second annual Juneteenth Walk to the River. The event started at Wells Park and heads up MLK Boulevard to Plant Riverside District to celebrate a day of freedom.
