Not Your Average Study Abroad Trip: Savannah State Students Take On Youth Substance Abuse in Ghana

For most college students, the study abroad experience offers a combination of learning, sightseeing, culinary adventures, and cultural immersion, but for four Savannah State University students, the summer 2025 study abroad trip to Ghana means something more and much deeper. The journey was deeper than the education; it was about healing and the goal of bringing hope to the communities in need.

Savannah State University partnered with the Network for Rural Missions (NRM) and organized a four-week trip to Ghana with Dr. Roenia DeLoach, a coordinator of SSU’s Master of Social Work Program. The students who participated were Jessie Herbert and Kyla Chandler, both mass communications seniors; Kayleen Tarentine Hill, a biology senior; and Jamya Brundage, a sophomore studying middle grades education.
