Essex Street renamed in honor of Tremont Park neighborhood’s “Mother”

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – People in the Tremont Park neighborhood in Savannah will now go up and down Annie Bell Graham Way, honoring the community member’s legacy that impacted lives for decades.

Annie Bell Graham and her husband Elliot settled in the Tremont Park neighborhood in 1941. They raised 12 biological children and were legal guardians to more than 15 others at their home at Essex and Second Street.

She’s among the first African American property owners in the community and served in the Tremont Park Missionary Baptist Church for 60 years. Known as being the “Mother” of the neighborhood, she’d let anyone inside for some shelter, food, clothes, and money at the drop of a hat…
