Mayor’s Memo: Hardeeville Mayor Harry Williams introduces a new kind of C.O.P.

What is the first thing you think of when you hear “Police”? Crime, traffic tickets, yellow tape? The modern police department is so much more than a Law-and-Order TV Show. Think “Community Oriented Policing”, a new kind of C.O.P.!

Meet Sergeant (Downtown) Gerry Brown and Corporal Joey Ginn, Hardeeville’s “C.O.P.S”. Their goal is not to solve crime, but to prevent crime by engaging our community, young and old, with positive, friendly and informative, daily interaction. What does that all mean? Let’s look at what these two officers are doing.

What I particularly like is their work with kids. Each summer they host “Cops and Cones” and treat the neighborhoods’ young folks (of every age) to ice cream cones. At Agape, they have started “Summer Camp” every Wednesday and opened July 2 with grilling hot dogs and hamburgers for all the campers. Next up is an introduction to Disc Golf…
