SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV)– Summer fun is still blazing on, but with temperatures skyrocketing into the triple digits, the fun can turn serious, especially for kids. This week, officials are sharing tips with parents to ‘beat the heat’ in Savannah with expert tips on how to help your family stay cool and safe. WSAV spoke with doctors to learn more about how to spot warning signs early and where to find Savannah’s best spots to cool down.

More than 130 million people were under an extreme heat alert across the United States this weekend, and that heat continues here in the Coastal Empire. The kids who run around in the splash pads have the right idea… cooling off to beat the heat. However, even when taking steps to cool down, children are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses than adults. It has everything to do with how their smaller bodies work and recognizing early warning signs to prevent any trouble.

Young children are more vulnerable to heat because they overheat faster and don’t cool down as efficiently, even while swimming or playing in the shade. Doctors warn that symptoms like headaches, nausea, and irritability can signal heat exhaustion or even heat stroke…
