Site of ‘Weeping Time’ tragedy on the market, activists push for preservation

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The site where the single largest documented sale of slaves in American history took place is now for sale or lease.

The 35.15 acre plot is located at 204 Old West Lathrop Ave. in Savannah. It’s marketed as a major industrial development opportunity.

While the land could bring new industry and jobs to the area, local activists are pushing to preserve it instead. Rev. Dr. Leonard Small, the president of the Weeping Time Heritage Corridor Authority, talked with WSAV about the importance of keeping this land undeveloped…
