At the request of the Savannah Police Department, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is looking into an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday afternoon in Chatham County.
Around 2:50 p.m. on September 19, officers responded to a 911 call about gunfire on Shady Grove Lane. The caller reported that 29-year-old Lezar Christie of Savannah had fired shots into a shed in his backyard while the caller was outside.
When officers arrived, they spotted Christie in his own backyard, which backs up to the caller’s property. Christie then fired at an officer. A perimeter was quickly established, and officers observed Christie until one officer returned fire, striking him.
