Savannah, Georgia, is a city steeped with history and charm. It’s also well known for its food and art scene and its newest boutique hotel, The Douglas, is a celebration of both.
The sixteen room property in the heart of the city’s historic district quietly opened in June of this year following a two year restoration. With its James Beard-nominated chef, luxurious amenities, and a guest-only bar that rivals the best drinking spots in town, it’s primed to become one of the city’s preeminent places to stay and play.
The Property
The Douglas has over 150 years of history behind it. Originally built in 1853, the property has been a private residence, apartments, a Girl Scout annex, and most recently, the Ballastone Inn.
In 2023, the team behind Charleston’s popular Obstinate Daughter and Wild Olive restaurants took over the space. Obstinate Hospitality spent two years working with designer Kirby Caldwell renovating and restoring the hotel, reviving historic elements like the heart pine floors and stained glass transoms. There are a few modern touches throughout, like a commercial-grade kitchen, as food is a centerpiece of every guest’s stay.
The hotel is only for guests 21 and older which is a bit of a catch-22. If you’ve got small children you won’t be able to enjoy all of the character the hotel has to offer, but if you’re kid-free you’ll be guaranteed a quiet and relaxing stay.
Inside The Rooms
The 16 rooms are spread across four levels of the house and range from fairly standard size hotel rooms to ‘grand rooms’ that feature a more spacious seating area and nearly 500 square feet of space. Many of the rooms have fireplaces, and while they aren’t in operation it still helps give everything a cozy and comfortable vibe…
