Highway 21 widening project update, as ECSO shut portions of it down for fatal crash forensic mapping

RINCON, Ga. (WTOC) – The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office shut down a portion of Highway 21 on Tuesday for forensic mapping of a fatal crash earlier this month.

The mapping-lane closures on Highway 21 and 4th Street are to further investigate the crash that killed 22-year-old Cindy Chavez on October 8. According to the ECSO, Chavez was turning left from 4th Street to head south on Highway 21 when a pickup truck driver heading north on Highway 21 crashed into her. The pickup truck driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

People living and working near the 4th Street intersection told WTOC that a traffic signal or turn-right only option would help improve safety in that area…
