Officials seek donations to support unpaid federal workers

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Federal workers at Savannah-Hilton Head Airport are still showing up every day – even as the government shutdown stretches on. Now, the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce and SEDA are stepping in to help. They’re asking the community to lend a hand to the hundreds of federal employees working without pay.

Since October 1st, more than 225 federal employees have kept Savannah’s airport running safely and efficiently, all while missing paychecks. This long list of workers includes TSA Agents, FAA staff, air traffic controllers, and Customs officers.

The Chamber and SEDA are calling on local businesses and residents to donate items such as gas or Uber gift cards, boxed lunches, or even small financial contributions to help. Monetary donations are being collected through the United Way, which will distribute help directly to workers in need. Officials say these employees are neighbors and friends, people keeping essential services going despite the uncertainty.
