Local veteran survived two helicopter crashes in Vietnam

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Tuesday is Veterans Day – a time to honor those who’ve served and sacrificed for our country. Coastal Georgia has a strong military community, and veterans make up over 7% of the population within the state.

Every veteran has a remarkable story, one of them being Chatham County veteran Gilbert Terry, who risked everything in the skies over Vietnam. The former Army pilot was shot down not once – but twice – and lived to tell the story. He earned the Distinguished Service Cross – an award second only to the Medal of Honor.
