Demolition for Martin Luther King Jr. arena approved, leaders tout town plan restoration

A key element of Savannah Civic Center site redevelopment cleared a major step Wednesday, paving the way for substantial redevelopment of Savannah’s town plan at the site.

The Historic District Board of Review approved the demolition application for the Martin Luther King Jr. Arena by unanimous vote. Savannah city staff has projected demolition will begin in Q1 of 2026 at an estimated cost of $10 million, according to reporting by the Savannah Morning News.
