Jury trial begins for man accused of murder in 2019 assault

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Guyton man accused of murder following a New Year’s Eve assault is set to begin jury trial on Monday.

Charles Alexander Teeple IV was indicted in early December on charges of murder, aggravated assault, exploitation and intimidation of an elderly person following a 2019 assault that prosecutors say led to the death of retired Savannah fireman, Bruce Helmly.

The incident occurred on New Year’s Eve in 2019 when Teeple reportedly punched 66-year-old Helmly at Basil’s Bar in Wilmington Island. Witnesses at the time said the punch was unexpected and unprovoked. Teeple, who was 19 years old at the time, fled the scene after the assault.

“We went to bed, and I woke up the next morning to get ready for work, and I couldn’t wake him up,” Tara Helmy told WSAV back in 2020. “So I called 911.”…
