Tybee Island Maritime Academy secures backup location at former Thunderbolt Elementary

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System Board voted to approve the purchase of the former Thunderbolt Elementary property, providing Tybee Island Maritime Academy with a backup location as its future on Tybee Island remains uncertain.

The board’s decision does not amend or alter the existing charter agreement with TIMA. Any future changes to the charter agreement would have to go through a process required by Georgia law.

“This potential acquisition in Thunderbolt means that no matter what, we can still continue to provide a world-class education for our families and their students, their children,” said Peter Ulrich, executive director of Tybee Island Maritime Academy.

Current lease expires in 2028

The school’s current lease is up in 2028, and there’s no clear plan to relocate it elsewhere on Tybee. Ulrich said he’s still hoping the school can be moved to the future Memorial Park…
