Savannah birth center closure highlights challenges in Georgia maternal health

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Georgia continues to struggle with maternal and infant health, and the closure of Savannah Birth and Wellness Center leaves families in the growing region with fewer options for care.

According to the March of Dimes 2025 report card, Georgia received an F for preterm births, with roughly 11.8% of babies born before 37 weeks, higher than the national average. Advocates say the state’s challenges highlight the importance of accessible maternity care, particularly as communities grow.

The Savannah Birth and Wellness Center is set to close after nearly four decades in operation. Once the only freestanding birth center in Georgia, it provided prenatal care, deliveries and women’s health services outside of a hospital setting…
