A GoFundMe was created for the man killed in last week’s officer-involved shooting.

On Jan. 22, Mark Whibbey Jr. allegedly carried a firearm and shoplifted at a convenience store at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Bay Street. A Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) report stated Savannah Police Department (SPD) officers told him to drop the firearm repeatedly, and when he did not, five officers fired at him.

According to court documents, Whibbey was homeless and released from the Chatham County Detention Center a day before the incident after being held for a month on shoplifting charges…
