Salvation Army plans Center of Hope on west Savannah property

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – A long-disputed property in west Savannah tied to the Weeping Time controversy is now the focus of new plans, as the Salvation Army proposes a facility aimed at meeting both historical awareness and present-day community needs.

The property along Augusta Avenue has been at the center of debate for years. While a study concluded the site itself was not part of the 1859 slave auction known as the Weeping Time, the location remains symbolic for the community.

“The Salvation Army is seeking to build a meaningful bridge between their mission and the beloved Westside community,” Pastor Otis Shipp Jr. said. “The proposed Center of Hope project sits at the intersection of profound history and pressing present needs, a crossroad that calls for both reverence and vision.”…
