Savannah airport delays flights after grass fire near runway

A grass fire near the runway forced a temporary closure of the airfield at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport on Sunday evening, delaying some incoming flights before operations resumed about 50 minutes later.

Senior Director of Marketing and Air service Lori Lynah said the fire was reported around 7 p.m. in an area adjacent to the runway. The airfield was shut down while crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

The runway reopened less than an hour afterward, and normal operations resumed…
