Sheriff reminds drivers of Georgia open container law

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office shared a reminder about Georgia’s open container law ahead of St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The law prohibits possession or consumption of any alcoholic beverage container within the passenger area of a motor vehicle, including the unlocked glove compartment or any area accessible to the driver or passengers.

An open container is any bottle or receptacle that contains alcohol and is open, has a broken seal, or has had contents removed. Resealed containers do not count as open. A conviction for violating this law is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $200 and two points added to the driver’s license…
